Supply Chain Automation Trends 2026

Intro

Gartner groups its 2026 supply chain technology trends into three themes: autonomy and agency, specialisation and intelligence, and trust and governance. Every one of them assumes a system can obtain reliable data about what is physically happening. In a cross-border lane, that data arrives as a document.

Rather than list trends, this report walks a single lane stage by stage --- order, booking, customs, gate, receipt, settlement --- and shows where automation currently stops. Visibility platforms cover the movement between those stages well. The stages themselves are still gated by a document arriving in a format nobody controls, which is why a lane can be tracked in real time and still lose two days at a desk.
